Aberdeen Police Officer Dies In Off-Duty Incident

Charles Armetta recently completed training to head Aberdeen's K-9 unit.

The Aberdeen Police Department is in mourning Saturday after the overnight death of a colleague.

Officer Charles Armetta died while off duty in Baltimore Saturday morning, Aberdeen police said.

Armetta fell from an elevated portion of Interstate 95 around 3:15 a.m., Aberdeen police said.

Armetta had recently completed training to lead the department's K-9 unit

Mayor Michael Bennett shared with Patch that he recently witnessed Armetta and Maverick, Aberdeen's police dog, make their first apprehension.

"Its not easy to lose one of your own and its not easy for me a 40-year veteran of law enforcement to lose one of our officers," Bennett said.

"Nothing but really good memories. We’ve lost a tremendous police officer in the city," Bennett added. "He’s a guy that would make you laugh. He was full of energy."

Jason Neidig, president of the Harford County chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police and an Aberdeen police colleague, issued a statement to Patch on Armetta's passing.

"I am saddened and at a loss for words in the untimely death of Brother Charles Armetta," Neidig wrote. "Brother Armetta was a dedicated officer and very involved with the Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge No. 128. Not only do I grieve for his family but for his wife and their daughter who turns 1 on Monday. The F.O.P. will offer any and all support to the family and the officers."

Rest In Peace brother. You were a hero and a great police officer. You were fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to work in one of the most noble professions, law enforcement. Thank you for your service, we’ll take it from here. We will miss you Charles. EL-23

Charlie, not only were you a great Father, Husband, Son, Brother, and Officer. But, you were also a great Cousin to my brother and I. You helped me through highschool when I was a freshman and you were a Senior. You were always there for me like family should be. You even taught me how to drive a stick shift in your "Lime Green Acura Integra." I know your looking down on us now, from a better place, and I hope you can help the family get through this tragic time.
Love You, Cousin

Oh so sad! I did not know him personally but he worked occasionally with my bother Andrew who used to work at The Diamond Club in the Clarion Hotel. My brother tells me that he was an awesome guy and a an even greater officer and could ALWAYS make you laugh and smile no matter how bad your day was going! You will be missed by many! I am very very sad for the wife and that baby daughter. Such a horrible tragedy. =(

THERE IS NO WORDS I CAN SAY ON THIS TRAGEDY. WE ALL HAVE LOST AN OUTSTANDING OFFICER AND AN ALL AROUND GOOD PERSON. I SEND MY PRAYERS TO HIS WIFE, CHILD AND THE REST OF HIS FAMILY. I'M SAD FOR MARVERICK (HIS PARTNER) WHO HAD JUST STARTED HIS CAREER WITH OFC ARMETTA, THE BOND AND TRUST THEY BOTH HAD WITH EACH OTHER HAS NOW COME TO AN END. THEY WERE THE PERFECT TEAM...GOD BLESS YOU ALL...
