Funeral Set for Harford School Board President
Dr. Leonard Wheeler died on Sept. 11.
Dr. Leonard Wheeler, the president of the Harford County School Board, died Tuesday. His funeral is set to take place early next week.
Wheeler passed away suddenly Sept. 11 at the age of 73. The school system announced his passing to staff and the media on Wednesday.
Visitation for Wheeler is set to take place Monday from 2-4 p.m. at Ames United Methodist Church in Bel Air, according to his obituary on McComas Funeral Home's website.
A funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday.
He will be buried at Arbutus Memorial Park, located at 1101 Sulpher Spring Road in Baltimore.
Wheeler was appointed to the board in 2008 after he retired from Baltimore City Public Schools. There he was a teacher, curriculum specialist, principal and assistant superintendent, according to his profile on the Board of Education page on the school system website.
Wheeler was also a member of Ames United Methodist Church, the Harford County Judicial Nominating Committee, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), according to a release from the school system.
"Dr. Wheeler was an advocate for education and dedicated his life’s work to community service,” said Superintendent of Schools Robert Tomback in the release. “All of us in the Harford County Public Schools are deeply saddened by the loss of Dr. Wheeler, and, on behalf of our more than 5,000 employees, I extend my sincere condolences to Dr. Wheeler’s family."
He is survived by a son, Christopher Wheeler, and Dr. A. Barbara Wheeler, who is the superintendent of Kent County Public Schools, the release states.
