My prayers are with his family. My question is; was he wearing his seatbelt? Was he traveling at an excessive rate of speed? These are two things I see law enforcement officers doing on a regular basis. Not to mention talking on their cell phone. Regardless no one deserves to loose their life, but law enforcement should follow the same laws they enforce.

You people have no right to judge those who risk their live everyday to keep you from harm! It doesn't matter now what he was doing. He is gone and he is never coming back. And I hope for your sake that if you ever lose someone you care about you don't have to listen to the insensitive bs you are currently dishing out. And I hope that if you are ever in need of the assistance of any law enfircement officer that you remember they are the ones who are helping you and if they delay their response to stop and take an emergency call from dispatch about your situation on their cell you might be dead by the time they get to you.

To the family of the Maryland Deputy that just died in the line of Duty. On behalf of my entire family, you are in our prayers. I am the mother of Deputy Michael C. Walizer, Charles City VA. Sheriff Department.EOW 3/31/12. He was killed in a car crash responding to backup another Deputy. He was killed at 2am at the end of his shift. We his family will miss him until the day we are with him again. My prayers go out to you the family of the Maryland Deputy that was just killed in the line of duty. We know your pain, your heartache your loss. May God give you the strength you will need at this time. As for the comment of Gary Olivier. My son followed all of the requirements of a dedicated law enforcement officer on his way to support another Deputy and his friend as well, and he died doing it. The fallen Deputy’s department will be investigating all of your questions that will be their job. Your job right now is to support this Deputy’s family and fellow Deputies...not question his job performance.

Thank you stacey. I tried to place a comment before in regards to the negative comments on here but it didnt post. I knew him personally. He was a good cop. He will be greatly missed. It is a very sad day for all of us. And to those who feel the need to say the negative things o forgot such a day, i sincerely hope you dont have to rely on a cop that pulls over to answer his cell wen dispatch calls him for an urgent msg regarding ur case. It would b tragic if something bad happened to anyone bc a cop was delayed.

Wow , scoots and Gary didn't say anything hurtful about an officer being killed, they simply stated concern for the situation and if it could've been a preventable accident.its sad that anyone's life was taken in a car accident wether its a police officer, the mailman, or a plumber going to work.i have seen officers doing the same thing Gary speaks of and sometimes it seems like a double standard for police officers.

Kristen, I feel it is time to REMOVE negative comments on this story. Most everybody has been respectful but unfortunately, some have not. The family is dealing with the worst news anyone could ever get; that there loved one has passed. If people want to judge and be negative, they need to do so in private. The large amount of negativeity and lack of couth displayed by some is the main reason i do not read online news, I believe I will stick to printed media without ANY comments. I will end by saying this; to the family of Cpl. Licato, no matter what, you are in the thoughts and prayers of so many.

People often take for granted what our police, fire fighters, and ems first responders do on a daily basis to serve our communities. Give this officer the respect he deserves, and do not try to place blame or fault on him during this time of grieving for his family, friends, and his fellow officers he served with. When was
the last time anyone stopped to thank these public servants for what they do on a daily basis. Having been in two accidents myself involving the striking of deer, this accident could have been something as innocent as trying to avoid a deer or other
animal. Let the police do their investigation before making judgement of this or any other first responder.

My heart breaks for the family and friends of this officer. I cannot believe the comments above regarding seat belts and cell phones. No matter what, this young man's life has ended in a tragic manner. My thoughts and prayers to his loved ones, and to his brothers in the Sheriff's office. No one should ever have to suffer this kind of loss, no parent should ever have to bury their child, no matter the age and circumstance. God forbid one of you nasty fools loses a child or loved one tragically. Would you want to read inappropriate comments such as Gary's and Scoots'? God help you if you need a First Responder's help...I don't think I would be so kind as to hurry to your aid.
I hope the family finds a way to have peace in the face of this senseless tragedy.

Cpl. Licato was extremely polite, professional, and friendly. My condolences to his family, whether they be his brothers and sisters in the HCSD or the ones at home.

A first responder rushes to everyone's aid. They don't know who they are responding to and do not care. They love their second job. Relax everyone. In that area it could have been a deer or maybe a heart attack. We could all be victims at any time. R.I.P.

Patch is a good news outlet, but it's sad to see when something happens how fast it can turn into a bashing blog. We none know when something is going to happen to us or our loved ones, its called life. Lets not make this any worse for the family and friends then it is already. As a personal friend of Charles shame on those who use this tragedy to judge an accident you have no first hand knowledge of. He was an amazing friend, brother, uncle, son and most of all a wonderful police officer. He deserves respect as does his family, friends and co workers as we grieve the loss of someone we loved. I would never disrespect your loved one so try to imagine losing your son and seeing comments like those above. To those who posted kind words they are greatly appreciated. Have any of you negative nancys out there considered that maybe these cops who have died lately have only lack of sleep to blame possibly due to being undermanned and over worked? Why is it automatically their fault and why do some of you feel as if youre entitled to know the facts about the situation? People are so quick to blame public servants when things go wrong or happen to them. Try thinking about the other side of the story and what if that were your family member, kid, or husband/wife.

He was in the line of duty and no matter what his occupation (it doesn't matter), no one will know what on earth happened on that road that night. We can only hope and pray that he used his best knowledge when having to be faced with what he was @ the time.He was one of the most amazing people I've ever met! A loving son, brother, uncle and godfather. He was a super hero w/o a cape. He was brave and strong yet gentle and kind! I hope all officers are half a man charlie was!...he will deeply be missed and live forever in my heart!
