Local Students Gear Up for Robotics Competition

FIRST Robotics is a worldwide multi-level set of age appropriate robotics competitions aimed at getting kids interested in STEM career choices.

Multiple times a week 20 high school students and their mentors meet inside of an empty automobile showroom to design and construct robots built for national competition.

FIRST Robotics is a worldwide multi-level set of age appropriate robotics competitions aimed at getting kids interested in STEM career choices. The program begins at young ages with Lego Robots and progresses into more complex competitions.

"I don't think enough people know enough about how to build a robot and all of the stuff that goes into troubleshooting and all of the problem solving," said Danielle Hoppel, a three-time FIRST Robotics competitor.

Hoppel is a member of Techbrick, the organization based in Aberdeen, which currently has two Lego teams, two FIRST Tech Challenge teams and a FIRST Robotics Competition team. 

"[The] industry and education sees this program is producing extremely capable young engineers," said Marco Ciavolino, a mentor for TechBrick. "The goal is to create an industry-like environment for them where they have to analyze a problem, come up with solutions, test them, retest them, redevelop them, fail, rebuild, fail, rebuild."
