Threat Prompts Increased Police at 5 Harford County Schools
A threat made at C. Milton Wright High School also mentioned Aberdeen, Edgewood, Patterson Mill and John Carroll high schools, police said.
Increased police presence is expected at five Harford County schools on Wednesday, after a threat at C. Milton Wright High School, officials said.
While police do not believe it is a credible threat, law enforcement and school officials said they aren't taking any chances.

This is the second threat to impact C. Milton Wright within the past week. On Thursday, Oct. 18, someone wrote a bomb threat on a C. Milton Wright bathroom mirror. When the message was found, the building was evacuated and police searched the school with a bomb detecting dog. The dog and deputies found nothing dangerous inside the school.
"The same day that we had a bomb threat at the school, we had a writing that said something would happen on 10/24, which is tomorrow," Capt. Keith Warner, spokesman for the Harford County Sheriff's Office, said Tuesday.
The second threatening message mentioned four additional local schools— private school John Carroll, and public schools Patterson Mill, Aberdeen and Edgewood high schools.
Teri Kranefeld, manager of communications with Harford County Public Schools, explained that this message threatened C. Milton, but served as more of an alert message to the other schools, as opposed to a direct threat.
"There is only one school that was cited in the threat and that is C. Milton Wright," Kranefeld said.
Warner said the message did not indicate that anything would happen at the other schools, but because they were mentioned, they are also on high alert this week.
All five schools are expected to have an increased police presence Wednesday.
"We are providing security at all the schools, of course, we will have more security at C. Milton Wright," Warner said.
Kranefeld said that public schools have a plan in place for Wednesday, but would not divulge details for safety reasons.
"We’re putting all precautions in place," Kranefeld said.
Madelyn Ball, principal at John Carroll, sent out an email message to parents alerting them to police presence and the threat.
"As a parent, you have a right to know about this situation so that you can make a decision about whether or not to send your child to school on Wednesday, October 24," Ball wrote in the email, a copy of which was obtained by Patch.
If parents decide to keep their children home from the private school Wednesday, it will be considered an excused absence as long as parents call that morning and send a note the next day, the email states.
"We don’t think it’s a credible threat," Warner said, adding that, nevertheless, no threat is left unaddressed. "We’re going to do everything we can to make sure nothing does happen," Warner said.

It is a shame that Harford County Public Schools didn't feel it was necessary to notify the parents of this threat like John Carroll did...it's a good thing I subscribe to the Patch on Facebook...otherwise I wouldn't know anything!

I agree. It is outrageous that this information had to be obtained from Facebook and did not come directly from the school system. As the parent of 2 high school students in Harford County I think it should be left up to me to make the final decision on the safety of my children. Can you imagine the backlash from parents if something bad were to happen that they had prior notice of?!? Ridiculous when recordings are sent out for many other reasons...and THIS is what they choose to withhold!!!

You should contact secretaries at your children's school(s) to find out about getting on the list for the automatic calls.

One is automatically on the list with the phone number you provide the school. If you are not getting Alert Now calls than call the school and fix your phone number.

CB9678, many parents have a current phone on record and yet don't get these calls. My relative in Marlboro had her daughters school let out early because of a bomb threat a few years ago and she didn't get a call.
Since she was a 'work at home' mom, they should have been able to get her, not to mention that she has/had a answering machine.

Leilani....even worse..my son goes to C. Milton Wright and when they had the bomb threat last week they lied to the kids and told them the evacuation was a drill and didn't notify the parents until 20 minutes before they were sent back into the school. My husband happened to ride by the school and saw the police surrounding the school. Not a great feeling for a parent. I had to call Harford County Public Schools communications center to find it what was going on.

On the announcements, Mrs. Molter did not say it was a drill, she said, "Since we did a very good job with this this morning, I know that we will have a successful evacuation. The school is on Code Red lockdown, please report to your homeroom teacher like this morning."
She did not lie to anyone, she merely complimented us and told us her expectations.

A drill was scheduled the same day the bomb threat happened. No one lied to the kids or the parents. Come on folks, give the schools some credit.

Why are you talking down on HCPS when it is really your responsibility to get your phone number part of the alert system?
MR
8:21 am on Wednesday, October 24, 2012
I agree with Will, as a parent it is YOUR responsibilty to make sure you receive ALL the alerts that the school sends out. Stop blaming the school and take responsibilty for what you havent done.
Jeff

The school system has my correct information, I received 2 calls for the incident last week & nothing has changed in the past week. So to answer Will & MR, as a parent, I have made sure, as my responsibility, they have my correct information. I am blaming the school because I didn't receive a call from them when I should have. I had to find out about this on Patch. They obviously have my phone #, so what's your answer now? Do you still give HCPS a pass?
MR
10:37 am on Wednesday, October 24, 2012
To Jeff, instead of wasting good energy towards Will and myself, use your energy in contacting the school to find out why, one week you received a call and the other night you did not. With all the time you spent posted, you could have already contacted the school and had your answer. Good Luck.
Jeff
10:45 am on Wednesday, October 24, 2012
MR, I did contact the school, but I am not going to be attacked by someone who thinks they are smarter & has all the answers when they don't. Who are you to talk about my responsibility as a parent. You don't know me so who are you to question me? I am a very responsible parent of 3, 2 currently in this system & 1 who has graduated from it & is in college, thank you.
MR
11:50 am on Wednesday, October 24, 2012
Okay Jeff - First I never said I had all the answers nor did I say I was smarter. Second, if you dont want to be questioned about what you post on a public site, then don't post it. Third, the reason Will and myself said "it was parents responsibilty" to make sure the school has all the info is because, it is. You did not include in your initial comment that you did receive phone calls from the school the prior week, but did not receive a call the other night. Had you posted that in your original post, we wouldn't be discussing this now. Jeff my intention was NEVER to offend you, if I did I do apologize. Unfortunately, there are so many parents out there that always put the blame on everyone and everything. They never take responsibilty for where the blame needs to be put. Again, I do apologize if I offended you. Hope you have a nice day!

What a shame...it is unbelievable in these days and times that they feel it is their right to decide the fate of our kids. I am literally afraid for those parents who will not see this post and will send their children to school tomorrow with no knowledge of this. Not saying there couldn't be an emergency on any given day but a threat should be taken seriously and never overlooked or ignored.

Yes, we got a call tonight also. And last week received two calls - one to let us know the kids were evacuated while the school was investigated and another once the threat was cleared. I am glad the parents of CMW students were notified for the most part. That is a start, and my children do not go there however they do attend Aberdeen and if they were considered "involved" enough to increase police presence, parents should be "involved" in the issue as well. This wasn't meant to be a debate or based against schools but I do disagree with the way it is being handled and have the right to my opinion. Point blank period...absence on the record for my children excused or not. To each his own and I will be praying that it was only a student hoax.

My daughter goes to Aberdeen High as well and I haven't heard anything from anyone. We only found out about 20 minutes ago because she got on FB and seen that everyone was talking about it!!! That's when I called 3 different News stations to ask if they were aware of any of it and only 2 of them knew anything. I know it wasn't mentioned on the 6:00 PM news but that may be because it was something like 5:00 PM when it was told to the public via. FB and all. It's a shame and Harford County Schools should be ashamed of themselves for not keeping us parents up to date with things like this!!! Look at that boy who brought the gun to school and shot the other boy...he posted it on FB before school so it was last minute I understand, but come on this is the night before and we have plenty of time to be notified.........SO WHERE'S MY NOTIFICATION HCPS????? All I know is serious or not, my daughter will not be in school tomorrow. It's a shame I have to worry everyday that she's in school as it is, I'm sure not going to send her when there is any kind of threat made!

I know I am up to date on all my contact information with the school and the Board, they have both my numbers and my husbands...so what's the excuse for me not being notified. I haven't spoke to any parent of an Aberdeen High student that was notified as of yet. Who actually handles that anyway is it the board or the school themselves? Because I have a few choice words about it.

Unlawful? Probabilities? Knew since the 18th? We have an opportunity to make an educated decision? Really? IF this is an unlikely chance of anything that may occur, why is it unlawful? I too did not receive a call or an e-mail. At this point in time there should be no cars on the lot, no one playing tennis, no trash and roving patrols. The Patch has a time stamp of 5:13 pm, and now I am supposed to be comfortable with plans set in place??? Am I missing something?

His friends parents read about it on The Bel Air Patch. (Thank you Bel Air Patch!) I did a search and there is an article in The Baltimore Sun! Shame on you HCPS for doing a horrible job informing parents of a potential life and death situation! Needless to say, I will not be sending my son to school tomorrow!

Each parent has a responsiblity to make sure that their phone number is on file to get the calls. Like last week, CMW notified the parents as appropriate and tonight as well. The other schools should've sent notification and if they didn't, they will have to explain that reason. I wish they would do email notification as well.....very easy for them to publish it via edline...... but I will say, you would be surprised how many families DO NOT have current information on file and do not check their edline. CMW handled appropriately -- although many of us would prefer the email and/or phone txting to alert us -- the technology is there. Any parent at CMW not getting the calls.....you need to check your phone info that is on file. Also.....keeping students home.....that was only an option for John Carroll not CMW or other schools. I do appreciate the patch publishing the info. Based on everyone's responses there are MANY MANY inconsistencies in the information that the school system has and it needs to be addressed. In this day and age....and the technology that is available.....should be no problem with communicating.....but again you would be surprised how many families don't even check their info is correct.

There are major inconsistencies with the notifications. Reading these comments from other CMW parents who received calls last night makes me wonder why I did not. All my numbers in the system are up to date. I got the calls about the previous bomb threat to my home phone AND my cell phone- but this time nothing. Not sure why.

Rest assured that the school system and law enforcement agencies are diligently working hard to protect all staff and students from threats of any kind. The situation is taken very seriously and please be confident that it is under control. Also, the best canines are on duty. Pray people, instead of pitching fits. Pray for the officers ensuring the safety of our communities. Pray that the person or persons responsible for such criminal threats are held accountable for their actions and prosecuted to the fullest extent that the law will allow.

I believe in all goodness they do to keep us safe and they are doing what they can to keep us safe today but to me having things under control is when they catch the student or person who has been writing theese letters for the past week thats when ill feel more safe to be in school...i really didn't believe this was going to happen but i stayed home better safe then sorry and i am a student so i know there are some kids in there that are just crule and have anger issues and for that i don't deny the fact that our liveswill be put into danger just this time.

The suggestion I emailed to our principle (CMW) is that they need to educate parents on how they can ensure the numbers they want called are 'in the system' as we don't know where it is coming from. Also suggested that they utilize email and/or phone texting. At the same time....parents have to understand that there are some cases where they can't make the call right away or post right away.....but again...what is the process they use to determine when to make the call, etc. This is a good thing as it is showing where the inconsistencies in the processes are and what they need to fix. Before everyone starts jumping and blaming....the question does need to be presented to the HCPS board about what is the policy to determine when the call is made, why not also utilize technology and where is the school getting the phone numbers from?

Hmmm...so let's see...students and parents are allowed to make a decision on whether or not it's safe to go to school but the teachers are expected to show up for duty regardless??? And PLEASE, if you are going to post on a public forum, get your grammar and spelling correct! It's incredible how people want to have their opinions taken seriously when they can't even take the time to spell-check them!

As a parent of a high school student in Harford County, yes, it can be concerning. BUT, if you fully read and comprehend what the article is saying there is NO CREDIBLE threat at ANY of the schools. The school system is doing exactly what they should do - NOT get everyone in a panic for something that they police department does not find credible. Yes, we live in scary times right now, but I for one will not let fools who are pulling a prank and loving all of this attention to scare me. We don't need to point fingers and place blame on the school system. They have been in contact with the police department and if the threat were actually credible ALL parents would be notified. We all love our children and want to do whatever we can do to protect them, but I also can't let fear run my life. I have to trust that the school system is on top of the matter along with the police department.

Maybe we parents should take irt on ourselves to some extent to keep each other informed and to not over react. No system is perfect and I have had hit and miss calls (mostly hit) with the robo call system. I didn't get a call from EHS about this nor did I expect to after reading the article.

The robo calls will NOT go through if the computer gets an answering machine and/or voice mail. The call is disrupted. And again, if there was NO CREDIBLE threat, they shouldn't send students and parents into a panic attack. We are all concerned about our children's welfare. However, did anyone think that if this were a real situation to be taken seriously that schools would have been open at all or that TEACHERS and STAFF who are PEOPLE and have FAMILIES of their own would STILL BE IN THE BUILDINGS?? Think about it.
