UPDATE: Two Dead after Incident at APG Pond

The victims were Navy divers, said Aberdeen Proving Ground officials.

UPDATE (10 p.m.)—Two divers from the U.S. Navy died Tuesday as the result of an incident at a pond on Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG), according to officials.

The APG Emergency Services team was called to an "incident" at the unexploded ordnance range pond, a statement from APG reported; officials did not elaborate on the nature of the incident.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene, said officials.

The second victim was taken to Harford Memorial Hospital and was pronounced dead, said APG spokesperson Kelly Luster.

Identities of the victims are not being released; it is the policy of the Navy to wait 24 hours before making this information public.

Approximately one month ago, a man died while diving in the APG "super pond." He was an Aberdeen Proving Ground diver from Nottingham.

Better ask the sergeants if you really want to know what is going on. Sorry for the families of the divers. Watch as the "cover up" begins.

There is no excuse for this from what I understand the COL that is in charge of this pond only had a one day safety stand down after the first person died Jan 30th in this pond without getting OSHA involved to find out what caused that accident. They are trying to say it was human error but now it is hard to believe that the first accident was human error since 2 more divers have died and it hasnt even been a full month? I think that pond needs to be drained and a total investigation needs to be done before anymore testing is resumed. God Only knows what TOP SECRET thing that is dangerous is going on in that pond but it is not worth the life of our Americans and someone needs to pay for this. I think alot of leaders need to be looked at for letting this happen again that soon or ever.

You have no idea how big that "pond" is, and you are correct, quite alot of what is tested there IS top secret, and must be tested to ensure weapons systems don't fail in the field. I seriously doubt they were pool boys scrubbing the scum line and clearing the skimmers.

Military Facilities for the most part are exempt from OSHA regs and investigations.

Not sure where you got your "misinformation" from but ALL accidents are investigated by the appropriate agency as is this one.

We felt an explosion, which we assumed was in the normal run of testing. Now we wonder.

How about everybody shut up about what might have happened or how they think things were handled or not handled and keep your comments to expressing sympathy for the families. If you don't know the details...don't speculate or accuse!

The General? Sergeants? Really no idea of what goes on at APG. Perhaps we oughtta get Captain Kirk to investigate this! Unless you were an investigator or actually work on the proving grounds who are you all to make these assumptions? There have been no final results, the first accident is still being investigated. Let the souls rest in peace. If you want to investigate it or offer your two cents go get a degree in investigations apply for work at CID or OSHA and then maybe after years of training you might have a valid point! Drain the pond? Yea okay let's go a step further and draing the bay too and maybe we can find out why it's so filthy!

Thanks for the common sense post, Ed. It appears to be lacking in most "opinions" on here.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion. You don't like mine, I don't like yours. But, I am having a hard time accepting these deaths. Not near as much as their loved ones are of course.

I think it is nice that all of you care so much about people at APG. But I can honestly say the "leadership" there promotes Safety and cares about everyone in the testing facility as a family. It affects them just as much as the outside public but more. Do not speculate until facts are given. Unless you are involved then you don't know. They do things there to make the soldier in the field safe. Their job is very dangerous. They know the risks and love what they do. Just pray for the families and keep the "conspiracy theories" to yourself .

Amen N/A. The leadership at APG is very proactive with Safety and taking care of their personnel. Incidents ARE investigated and nothing is "covered up"… seriously there are over 16K people on the installation – that would be a pretty wide spread conspiracy with the way people talk.
The folks at APG have suffered a huge loss these last weeks and continue to deal with it every day. No conclusions have been determined and focus needs to be on the families at this time not unfounded thoughts and theory!

Prayers and thoughts to the families who have lost a loved one. May we all get to know why this terrible thing has happened, something is terribly wrong and needs to be addressed.
No amount of compensation can replace the loss of a loved one but I hope the families receive the help and compensation that is due.

What the hell is everyone doing in the water in the middle of winter anyway? What is so important right now, and this very minute? Nothing. People first. Government second.

You realize Aberdeen Proving Ground is a Military Test facility, right? War doesn't stop for bad weather. They still test weapons and explosives out there. The navy tests systems in that pond. People that didn't grow up around here have no idea how much testing used to go on out there. Unfortunately, over the years people have given their lives to support our troops, making sure the systems given to our troops function as well as they possibly can. That is the mission of APG. It used to sound like a war zone around here every day. The sailors gave their lives for their country, no differently than a someone killed in a war zone. Civilian employees have made the same sacrifices on APG in support. For those that have made that sacrifice, I thank you and offer sincere condolences to your families.

Oh yeah sure everyone is safe. Bunk. How are you going to explain two very young men ,Reported by WJZ in their 20's going into cardiac arrest. You can't explain this so don't even try. Oh yeah N /A lets have 3 deaths to save hundreds. No way. And concerned I'm sorry but the families will never have compensation, cause the military never does anything wrong. This is so wrong on so many levels. I can't believe this happened again!!!!

Was it any different when people died testing tanks in the past on APG? It has been reported the two incidents were unrelated other than they both occurred in the super Pond.
Why does everyone always feel someone should be compensated for an incident like this?. These were servicemen, performing their duties and something happened. We don't know what. For all we know it could have been human error on their part. We have a volunteer force, and they assume the risks inherent in their job willingly and usually enthusiastically. Death is never OK, however it is part of military service, especially in time of war. Have people forgotten the fact we are still a nation at war?

This is crazy I was only told about one diver who lost their life. Wow this is heart breaking. A person goes to work like any other day and it is the last day of their life.
