Five Things for Friday

The IronBirds played at home for the final time in 2011 on Thursday.

1. The IronBirds. Aberdeen closed out its home schedule with a win Thursday at Ripken Stadium, using 13 hits to beat Tri-City, 5-3.

The IronBirds close out the season with three games at Hudson Valley, starting with a double-header Friday.

SARC's 2nd Annual Rising Above It Balloon Festival Balloon Glow Gala

The Balloon Glow Gala takes place at Maryland Golf & Country
Clubs and features the magical world of Oz. Several hot-air balloons will be lighted and will “glow” (weather permitting) during the evening, illuminating the area around the gala.
The evening features music, dancing, dinner, open bar and a signature “ruby slippers” drink. Entertainment includes the Craig Sparks Band,
magician Dick Steiner and a live auction featuring a balloon ride for two, a one-week stay in Myrtle Beach and a day of beauty at Merle Norman.
Harford Mutual is the title sponsor of the Balloon Glow Gala.
The gala benefits SARC, a Harford County nonprofit that provides
hope and resources to victims of domestic violence, sexual violence, child abuse and stalking.
Tickets cost $125 per person and must be reserved in advance by
visiting www.sarc-maryland.org.

Masters of the Chainsaw at Maryland State Fair

Masters of the Chainsaw is a group of the nation's top professional
chainsaw sculptors. Onlookers at the Maryland State Fair, standing behind protective netting, will be able to observe an original performance. The carvers' precision quickly transforms a three-foot-tall log into a work of art.
The public is also invited to participate in two auctions where the carvings will be sold to benefit the Maryland State Fair Scholarship Fund. The carvers will demonstrate their art weekdays at 1 pm, 3 pm and 7 pm. On weekends, the demonstrations will be held at 1 pm, 3 pm, 5 pm and 7 pm. Free with paid admission to the fair. The event will be held in the State Fair Park.
