Harford Woman Wins $2M Powerball Prize

Almerta Williams purchased her life-changing ticket in Edgewood.

Almerta Williams couldn't sleep Wednesday night.

Who would blame her?

The Harford County resident won $2 million, matching five numbers in the Powerball drawing that made national headlines.

“I had trouble sleeping because I kept thinking I didn’t want to lose the ticket,” Williams told the Maryland Lottery. “I slept with my purse."

The Maryland Lottery said Williams purchased the winning ticket at Herb’s Deli and Spirits in Edgewood.

She already has plans for the winnings, including a new house and an 80-inch television to put inside, the Maryland Lottery said.

Williams was one of 60 Powerball participants to match five numbers, according to CBS News. It was her Power Play opt-in that doubled the prize from $1 million to $2 million.

As of Thursday night, the two grand prize winners—who will share $587 million—had not come forward. The winning tickets were sold in Missouri and Arizona.

The current Powerball jackpot is estimated at $40 million, according to the Powerball website.

I told two of my employees that I had to lay them off yesterday. We all had a good laugh until IRead More told them it was not a joke. I did tell them that it was because of something some evil Republican congressman had done, and that seemed to make them feel a lot better.
