Key to Successful Workout Schedule? Rest Days

Change up your workout routine to avoid stagnation, one expert says.

Don’t feel like working out? You have permission to rest.

“When it comes to exercise, you have to take into account the time needed to heal and recover,” wrote Chris Aitken in his blog. “You need rest days built into your plan so you get that recovery time.”

Aitken warns against a repetitive schedule that promotes stagnation. He recommends varying workout and rest days instead of always following the same schedule week after week.

“If you always rest on the same days for the same amount of time, what happens when your body is in Rest Mode but suddenly needs to be in Beast Mode?”

Aitken mixes things up by doing CrossFit-based workouts and then takes time to “chill out, stretch, maybe go for a walk” on a rest day before he works out again.
