Scott Hunsinger Doesn't Run City Hall, He Helps it Run Smoothly

Hunsinger makes it his business to solve as many problems as he can.

If you’ve done business in City Hall, you’ve probably run into Scott Hunsinger.

His official title is executive support specialist.

“That could mean doing anything,” Hunsinger is quick to point out. So he has to be able to multitask.

“I do proclamations, set up for council sessions and make sure everybody gets their messages. I put calls where they belong,” Hunsinger said. “I’m the liaison with the mayor, the council, the city manager.”

Hunsinger is a big part of the oil that keeps the cogs running smoothly in City Hall. And he makes it his business to solve as many problems as he can. When he can’t personally address a citizen’s concern, he routes it to the appropriate area. On a daily basis, he works with City Clerk Monica A. Correll and City Manager Doug Miller to keep the city’s business moving administratively.

“We may not get back to everybody right away. But we do try to handle the problems,” Hunsinger said.

Hunsinger, 63, will celebrate his fifth employment anniversary with the city in July.

“I came here as a temp and it just evolved,” Hunsinger said. “I came to answer phones and make copies.”

It might sound as if Hunsinger is doing administrative assistant work. He is, to a degree, but the scope of his job has grown.

“I still do that but it has evolved into a lot more,” Hunsinger said. “I don’t have to sit behind a desk all day. I get to interact with people.”

Hunsinger said he is quite comfortable dealing with the public. That’s no surprise, given his vast experience.

Hunsinger has spent much of his career in various people-driven industries. He taught school in Harford County for most the 1970s. He was a district sales manager for Lufkin Industries from 1977 to 1985. He owned Winning Edge Consulting, his own athletic consulting firm, from 1986 until 1990.

He also has worked as an employment specialist for Maryland Job Service from 1993 to 1994. He spent 1994 to 1996 as a trainer for the SSA Baltimore Federal Credit Union and served as the athletic director for the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club in Essex, MD from 1996 to 1997. He has also been a job coach for the ARC Northern Chesapeake Region from 1997 to 2000.

"That probably was one of the most satisfying and exhilarating jobs I have ever had," Hunsinger said.

In the six years before he started working for Aberdeen, he worked as a fundraising adviser for S.H. Training & Fundraising Services. He set up education programs at steel plants in Conshohocken, PA and Coatesville, PA, for the United States Steel Workers of America Career Development Program. Hunsinger has even coached basketball for Harford Community College.

“I’m a people person,” Hunsinger said.

One of the things he finds most rewarding about his current position is the constant change.

“Each day is different,” Hunsinger said. “But everything is important.”
