The Haunting of Baker Cemetery

Everyone at this local cemetery may not be resting in eternal peace.

Considering that was settled more than , it should come as no surprise that the area has its share of legend and lore.

Tales of ghostly apparitions are a part of our local history and Aberdeen is no stranger to weird tales.

However, the past doesn’t always stay in the past. Sometimes it finds you in the present.

Baker Cemetery is a serene place. But apparently that isn’t always the case. According to one recent sighting, there may be an otherworldly presence lurking there.

One day, when the weather was warm and construction was taking place on the western exit of the cemetery, a person, who for the sake of simplicity I’m going to assume was a woman, went to visit the gravesite of her brother.

She was parked on top of the hill, facing the road, such that she could see Route 22. As she was leaving, she saw something that will no doubt stick in her memory for the rest of her life.

There was what at first appeared to be a man, clad in “a long black trench coat and wearing a black leather-looking floppy hat,” walking along Route 22. And if his clothing struck her as odd on that warm day, when he turned to face her, she knew something was wrong.

According to the story, “it was not the face of someone who would be of the living,” describing it as clammy and pale. She added that he was “not happy.”

Then, “all of a sudden the man raised his head and looked directly at me and started running a mad dash at me.”

Frightened, she fled to her car. She locked her doors and waited for the man to appear.

With only one exit available, she had no choice but to drive down the hill towards where she had seen this ghastly figure.

There was no one in sight. Not in the cemetery and not in either direction on Route 22.

She was pretty sure she had lost her mind.  And she never went back to the cemetery, either.

This could have been the end of the story, but it wasn’t.

Time passed and her mother wanted to know why her daughter didn’t visit her brother’s grave anymore.

So she told her mother what had happened that day.

To the woman’s astonishment, her mother told her the same thing had happened to her at the cemetery.  Ironically, she didn’t share the story with her daughter for fear of scaring her.

The story ends with her saying, “this spirit was not nice.”

This woman wonders if anyone else has had an experience like hers. You can share your story on Ghosts of America.
