alumna Mildred Jean Shepherd lost her class more than 17 years ago. But at the school's 45th reunion for the Class of 1966, the guest of honor traveled halfway across the country to return it to her.

Floyd Hechler, a resident of Burnet, TX, was shopping at a supermarket when he spotted the ring laying on the floor. With only Shepherd's initials and the name of the school engraved on the ring, Hechler sought its owner for 17 years.

“I had no use for it,” said Hechler, 72. “I’m just hard-headed. I said I have to find that owner before I die.”

It was no easy task, Hechler told Aberdeen Patch columnist Mark Schlottman on phone, as there are 14 Aberdeens in the U.S.

But he caught a break when he contacted Susan Gates Strock, a graduate of the Class of 1966, one week before the 45th reunion.
