Boys & Girls Club Director Acosta Resigns

is leaving the Boys & Girls Club.

In a news release Wednesday, the announced that their executive director will depart later this month for a role with the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation.

"For the past three years, Randy has led our staff and members of the Boys & Girls Clubs with a new level of energy," Club Board of Directors President Tory Pierce said in a statement. “He is a former Boys & Girls Club member himself and when he came to Harford County, he brought with him a needed sense of urgency which allowed him to successfully lead the clubs through a period of growth and change. His new position will allow him to take those qualities to yet another well-respected organization."

Tim Willis, Associate Executive Director and in his eighth year with the Boys & Girls Club, will serve as interim director. A nationwide search for a new executive director will be conducted.

Acosta's role with the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation was not immediately clear. The foundation is , named in honor of Vi Ripken, adjacent to the Aberdeen Boys & Girls Club facility.

Under Acosta's direction, the Boys & Girls Club has amassed a laundry list of accomplishments. The club took over the Aberdeen Swim Club, launched STEM programs and forged corporate and government partnerships—including with Camp Hidden Valley near Rocks State Park.

"Our corporate, government and community partners have been incredibly supportive of the Harford County Boys & Girls Clubs over the past several years," Acosta said in a statement. “Through these relationships, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Harford County has become a much stronger organization. Our long-time and new partners have provided valuable financial resources as well as many hours of their professional time to help members along their path to adulthood. Success is a natural outcome when so many different people in the community come together for a single cause." 

The Boys & Girls Club of Harford County is in its 23rd year. It has four locations in Harford County—Aberdeen, Bel Air, Edgewood and Havre de Grace.

The club is open for ages 6 to 18, with an annual membership of $12.

Beginning Sept. 4, the clubs will be open from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday to Friday. The reduction in hours aims to make up for a budget shortfall, according to the statement.
