Lady Eagles Lacrosse Team Loses to C. Milton Wright

Unlike C. Milton Wright, Aberdeen has never been known as a powerhouse in the world of scholastic lacrosse.

The Aberdeen Lady Eagles lacrosse team lost 20-2 to the C. Milton Wright Lady Mustangs Thursday night in a game that tested Aberdeen’s resolve rather than showed its skill.

Senior Amanda Willard scored both goals for the Lady Eagles and senior goalie Desiree Van made five saves.

Aberdeen Head Coach Kelly Zimmerman said the Lady Eagles didn’t expect to win, but worked the whole way through.

“They played hard and they had a lot of small successes,” Zimmerman said.

“My girls don’t start playing until 9th grade and Aberdeen doesn’t have a recreation program for lacrosse, whereas the girls from C. Milton Wright—some of them have been playing since they were 5 years old,” Zimmerman said. “That’s what makes the difference.”

 C. Milton Wright Head Coach Brent Ritz commended Aberdeen for its competitive spirit.

“They ran three to four defenses. They knew what was being called and they adjusted,” Ritz said. “They played hard the entire game.”

Willard said despite C. Milton Wright’s high score, Aberdeen’s spirit was never broken.

“I scored my first goal early in the game and once I scored, it gave me momentum,” Willard said.

But the Lady Mustangs quickly took the game’s pace from a trot to a gallop.

“C. Milton is already a hard team,” Willard said. “We already know we’re going to lose so there’s really no pressure.”

Van agreed. She said she never got discouraged as she protected the goal.

“I tried to stay positive and stay focused,” Van said. “If you keep that positive mentality it will show on the field.”
