Survey: Shopping Encroaching on Thanksgiving Day Activities

While 10 percent of shoppers plan to hit the stores on Thanksgiving, 42 percent of survey respondents said their top priority is visiting with family and 27 percent will watch a football game.

Fears that Thanksgiving day is being swallowed by Black Friday seem to have merit, says the website Tada.com, which cites a recent poll showing 10 percent of shoppers surveyed will head out to stores right after the big feast.

The site polled 4,509 shoppers and 10 percent said they’ll be heading out to stores on Thanksgiving Day for pre-Black Friday deals, while 8 percent will jump online to shop (31 percent of Gen Y will be shopping).

It’s not all bad news for the family-centric holiday, though, as 42 percent told Tada they plan to visit with friends and family after the holiday meal. Football seems to be another American tradition with staying power: 27 percent of the general public will watch a game.

Meanwhile, there’s waning interest in turkey among the younger demographic—and little to no appetite for cranberries. While senior citizens in the Tada survey ranked cranberries as their fourth favorite Thanksgiving food after turkey, mashed potatoes and stuffing, they came in dead last for Generation Y at ninth place. And Generation Y was the only age group to put turkey in second place; what’s more, 10 percent said they don’t plan to eat turkey at all.
