Shoppers-Deficit-Disorder

Many people often treat the holiday season a lot like I treat the check out lines. From Black Friday to Christmas Eve, we shop till we drop, pushing our stress levels off the charts.

I can’t stand getting stuck in long lines! Can you? When I approach the check out counter especially during the holiday season, I become like MacGyver—extremely strategic, ready to take on the world with a piece of chewing gum! My heart begins to race and my stress level starts to rise. I become impatient and short with the people around me!

Many people often treat the holiday season a lot like I treat the check out lines. From Black Friday to Christmas Eve, we shop till we drop, pushing our stress levels off the charts. If that sounds familiar, you might suffer from S.D.D. also known as Shoppers-Deficit-Disorder!

S.D.D. runs rampant during the hustle and bustle of the Holiday season. Christmas becomes more about managing stress and credit cards than about meaningful moments with family and friends. How meaningful has your last Christmas’ been? Are they filled with superficial moments exchanging gifts from house to house? If the pinnacle of your Holiday season is the result of shopping till you dropped not making memories, maintaining family traditions and acknowledging the reason for the season, then you might suffer from S.D.D.!

This (fake) disorder can only be cured by something not on the shelves in stores. It is not even on Amazon’s top 10 items to buy as Christmas presents. It is simple yet profound. Making meaningful memories can cure it. Because it’s in meaningful memories, you find peace in life. Happy Gilmore calls it your “Happy Place.”

To experience peace, you must change what you value. If you value shopping over making lasting memories with friends and family, it’s easy to come down with S.D.D. But if you value making memories that last longer than the newness of a gift, you can escape stress and find peace. Peace is the feeling you experience when you engage a positive memory that puts people above possessions and family and friends above finances. If your looking for the cure from S.D.D., check out Restore Church as we gather this Holiday season to make memories where you can discover peace!

Each week in December at Restore Church in our Christmas sermon series, “Undercover Boss: Christmas Edition,” will look at the life of Jesus as He traded the comfort of the corner office in Heaven for an undercover mission to change the world. In addition to our regular Sunday services in December, we’re planning two special services the week before Christmas.

(1) Join us on Tuesday, 12/20 at 7 PM for a special Candlelight Service at the Good Cause Community Center (616 Ontario Street, Havre de Grace)!

(2) Join us on Saturday, 12/24 at 5 & 6:30 PM for special Christmas Eve services at Havre de Grace’s Community Center (100 Lagaret Lane, Havre de Grace)!

Expect great things as we celebrate the birth of Christ “Undercover Boss” style!
