Aberdeen Bound: Mike Yastrzemski

The 2nd edition of '' Aberdeen Bound'', where we take a look at the newest IronBirds from the Orioles 2013 draft class. Today at IBN on the Aberdeen Patch, we take a look at Mike Yastrzemski.

Hello and Happy Father's Day IronBirds Nation!!!!! Right here at IBN on the Aberdeen Patch, we present the 2nd edition of '' Aberdeen Bound'', a look at all of the 2013 O's draft picks that are assigned to Aberdeen to start their professional careers. Today, we take a look at OF Mike Yastrzemski.

OF Mike Yastrzemski- A 14th round pick by the Orioles in the 2013 MLB draft out of Vanderbilt, the 22-year-old has a lot of potential and is definitely a player to watch for the IronBirds in 2013. Yastrzemski is a native of Andover,  Massachusetts and went to St.John's Prep in Danvers, Mass, about a half an hour away from Andover. After being a three year standout at St.John's, Yastrzemski was drafted in the 36th round of the 2009 MLB draft by the Boston Red Sox, but did not sign. Instead, the grandson of Red Sox Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski went to Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.

As a Freshman in 2010, Yastrzemski had a solid season, hitting .260 with 3 HR, 18 RBI, and a .347 OBP. In 2011 however, Yastrzemski played a huge part in the Commodores reaching the College World Series for the first time in Vanderbilt history, where the Commodores reached the Semi-finals before losing by a score of 4-6 to Florida, while Vanderbilt was also crowned as SEC champions for the 4th time in school history. In 66 games, the Left-Handed hitting Sophomore finished the season with a .296 AVG, 8 2B, 3 HR, 42 RBI, and a .422 OBP. He also ranked 2nd on the team in Runs (60) and 1st in Stolen Bases (23).

In 2012, the Junior continued to build on his 2011 success, as the Andover native finished the year with a .286 AVG and a .383 OBP in 63 games. Yastrzemski also ranked in the top 3 in nearly every major offensive catagory on the team, finishing 3rd in Hits (67) and T-3rd in Doubles (11), while placing 2nd on the team in Runs (46), HR (6), RBI (41) and SB (14). The 5-10, 185 pound Junior was also named to the 2012 SEC All-Tournament Team after leading the Commodores to the SEC Championship game before falling to Mississippi State Bulldogs, 0-3. After his impressive 2012 campaign, Yastrzemski was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 30th round 2012 MLB draft, but again did not sign and returned to Vanderbilt for his Senior season.

Deciding to stay at Vanderbilt payed off big time for Yastrzemski. The Commodores won another SEC Championship, the 5th in school history and the 2nd during Yastrzemski's outstanding career, while Vanderbilt also made the NCAA tournament for the 8th straight year. In 66 games, the Senior finished the year with a .312 AVG, 77 Hits, and 52 Runs, all ranked 3rd on the team. To add to his stellar stat line, he also hit 3 HR with 43 RBI, 20 SB and a team-high 19 Doubles with an outstanding .411 OBP. After his stellar career at Vanderbilt, which saw the Commodores reach the NCAA Tournament in all of his four years, the Baltimore Orioles drafted Yastrzemski in the 14th round in the 2013 MLB draft.

Analysis: Mike Yastrzemski is a very promising prospect on this 2013 IronBirds roster, look for him to make an immediate impact in the NYPL. Yastrzemski is a high-energy player with a good all-around game, and he is the definition of a team first player with a great work ethic. At the plate, the 22-year-old is a good contact hitter and shows good discipline in the box, as he doesn't chase pitches, has a nice swing, and hits to all parts of the field. Power isn't a huge part of his game, but he will hit a homer from time to time. On defense, Yastrzemski shows good athleticism and speed, has a cannon for an arm and has solid range in the outfield. He can play the corner outfield positions, but I think he has the tools and the talent to have a long-term future in Center. It is his outstanding career at Vanderbilt and his promising potential that makes Yastrzemski a prospect to keep an eye on in 2013 and beyond, not his Baseball-rich blood lines.

That's it IronBirds Nation! I hope you enjoyed taking a look at one of the newest IronBirds, and happy Father's day again to all the readers!
