IronBirds Score Six Runs in 8th; Win 10-4

The Aberdeen IronBirds (2-5) beat the Staten Island Yankees (2-4) by a score of 10-4 on Sunday night, giving the IronBirds their first winning streak of the season. The IronBirds were led by huge games from RF Connor Bierfeldt (3-4, 3 runs, 2 doubles, 1 HR, 2 RBI), 2B Kris Richards (2-5, 1 run, 2 doubles, 3 RBI), LF Sam Kimmel  (2-5, 1 run, 1 RBI) and DH Tanner Rust (2-3, 2 runs, 1 RBI), while relievers Janser Severino ( 3 Innings, 1 hit, 0 runs, 2 walks, 3 K's) and Michael Joseph ( 3 Innings, 1 hit, 0 runs, 2 walks, 2 K's- also got the W) combined for six straight shutout innings after IronBirds starter David Richardson ( 3 Innings, 5 hits, 4 runs, 1 walk, 2 K's) was pulled early in the game.

Connor Bierfeldt's HR in the 2nd Inning tied the game at 1-1 before Yankees DH Kale Sumner hit a 2-run double and Catcher Trent Garrrison followed with another RBI double to put the Yankees up 4-1 in the bottom of the 3rd. The IronBirds quickly cut it to a 4-3 Yankees lead in the top of the 4th after Kris Richards scored on a Connor Bierfeldt double and an RBI Groundout from Tanner Rust, but then had the bases loaded with no outs in the top of the 5th Inning before Yankees reliever Kelvin Castro struck out three in a row to get out of the jam without allowing a single run, resulting in a huge missed opportunity for the IronBirds, and one that had the looks of being costly as the game stayed at 4-3 going into the top of the 8th Inning.

Then in the 8th, Aberdeen opened the flood gates, scoring six runs in the inning that was capped off by a bases clearing 3-RBI double from Kris Richards. The IronBirds would again load the bases in the 9th Inning after Tanner Rust and Anthony Vega hit back-to-back singles and Yankees 1B Bubba Jones had another error, but the IronBirds would only get one run in the inning off of a double play, but held a 10-4 lead going into the last frame, where the Yankees got two runners on base but Michael Joseph closed out the game effectively, closing out a 2nd straight IronBirds W!!

Now, here's a couple of notes on the game last night:

- Hector Veloz was quiet on Sunday night, but he still extended his hitting streak to 7 games!

- Kris Richards also has a 4-game hitting streak, hitting a ridiculous 8 for 16 (.500) during the streak

- DH Tanner Rust recorded his 1st professional hit in the 2nd Inning last night, and his first RBI in the 4th Inning, congrats Tanner!!!!

- The IronBirds 12 Hits and 10 Runs are both team game-highs for your 2013 IronBirds!

- The IronBirds had 4 hitters  (Kimmel, Richards, Bierfeldt, and Rust) record multi-hit games last night, also a team game-high

- After last nights 7 K's, the IronBirds pitching staff still leads the NYPL in K's (67)

- Veloz is 2nd in the NYPL with a .414 avg, and Kris Richards is in 9th with a .364 avg

- Janser Severino is now tied for 3rd in the NYPL in K's (11)
