Crews Respond to Hazmat Situation on Old Philadelphia Road

The chemical leak was reported after 5 p.m. Wednesday in Aberdeen.

A leaking chemical incident drew first responders to C & S Wholesale Grocers on Old Philadelphia Road around 5:10 p.m. Wednesday, according to fire official Rich Gardiner.

Anhydrous ammonia was actively leaking inside the Aberdeen facility on the 1000 block of Old Philadelphia Road, said Gardiner, who is the spokesman for the Harford County Volunteer Fire & EMS Association.

The leak was contained as of 6 p.m., Gardiner said, and there was no threat to citizens.

Anhydrous ammonia is a colorless gas often used in manufacturing and refrigeration, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Northbound traffic was shut down on Old Philadelphia Road/MD Route 159 as of 5:36 p.m. due to the hazmat situation, according to the Maryland Department of Transportation.
