Police Chase Ensues After Man Rear-Ends Harford Sheriff's Deputy

The crash happened in Harford County and the man was arrested in Baltimore County, according to the sheriff's office.

A 33-year-old man is facing multiple charges after crashing into an unmarked patrol car driven by an off-duty sheriff's deputy and leading police on a chase across county lines, according to the Harford County Sheriff's Office.

At approximately 4:55 p.m. Monday, an off-duty Harford County sheriff's deputy was traveling westbound on Norrisville Road when the vehicle in front of him stopped to turn left onto White Hall Road and a Toyota 4Runner rear-ended the unmarked patrol car, said Edward Hopkins, a sheriff's office spokesman.

According to the sheriff's office, the deputy got out of his vehicle and identified himself as an officer to William Redding Harvey V, 33, who has addresses in White Hall and Jarrettsville and was driving the Toyota.

"Witnesses told police it did not appear that Harvey was responding to the deputy’s request and believed he may have been trying to leave the scene," Hopkins said.

As the deputy tried to place Harvey under arrest, "Harvey began to slowly veer around the patrol car, during which time the deputy became caught up in the vehicle’s movements," Hopkins said.

"The suspect continued to pull away," Hopkins continued. "The deputy, concerned for his safety and ... that he was at risk of being seriously injured or killed, fired his service weapon in an attempt to stop the threat."

Hopkins said that the suspect was not shot.

As the officer regained his balance, Harvey sped away from the scene, police said.

The deputy followed the 4Runner west on Norrisville Road to MD Route 439 into Baltimore County, according to the report.

As Harvey tried to turn onto a side street, the 4Runner rolled over, police said. Harvey got out and ran away, leading the deputy on a brief foot chase on Jolly Acres Road, according to Hopkins. The deputy caught Harvey and backup units arrived to take him into custody, police said.

Both the deputy and Harvey were taken to area hospitals, according to police.

The sheriff's deputy was taken by ambulance for treatment of minor injuries at University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson, where he was treated and released, police said.

Harvey was taken by ambulance to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center for treatment of cuts and bruises, police said. When he was released from the hospital at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, Harvey was taken into custody and booked at the Harford County Detention Center, according to Hopkins.

He has been charged with second-degree assault, resisting arrest, failing to obey a lawful order and obstructing/hindering an officer, Hopkins said.

Harvey was released Tuesday after posting $3,000 bail, according to the Harford County Sheriff's Office.

The sheriff's deputy is on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, according to the sheriff's office.
