1 Month Left In Aberdeen Recycling Sticker Contest

Aberdeen residents are recycling so often, the small green and blue tubs the city once provided are no longer big enough to do the job.

So the city is allowing bigger containers, and before doing so, it's holding a design contest for a new sticker to put on those containers.

"I think we're going to come up with some pretty neat stuff," said Matt Lapinsky, Director of Aberdeen's Department of Public Works.

Residents have until 3 p.m. on April 5 to submit a 4-inch-by-9-inch sticker design.

"Since we went to single-stream, it's increased so much. In places where guys used to get a single [container], now they're getting two," Lapinsky said. "We've outgrown the old tubs, which is a good thing."

Single stream recycling has erased the need for two containers—the blue was for bottles and cans, and the green was for paper. Residents can now use any size can they want, provided it has a sticker.

Lapinsky rolled out the idea for the stickers after catching a glimpse of the Harford County recycling stickers.

"It wasn't Aberdeen's," Lapinsky said of the county sticker. "I think this Mayor is pretty proud of the city from that perspective. I tossed [the contest idea] out there, and they loved it."
