Del. James: Higher Education, Closer To Home

Del. Mary-Dulany James offers a letter to her constituents.

Dear Friend,

One of the bills I am sponsoring, HB 1381, recently passed with a vote of 133-1 in the House of Delegates. This bill will help establish “2+2” buildings in my district. In keeping with Modern Democrats’ ideals of smarter more efficient government, these building are designed to give students with geographic limitations the ability to complete an Associate’s Degree in two years at a local community college and then proceed on to spending another two years in partnership with an accredited institution in order to attain their Bachelor’s Degree—all from the convenience of their local community. After all, why should students be put at a disadvantage based on where they live?

This is just one way that the “World is Coming to Cecil and Harford Counties”. With the help of local education leaders, the opportunity for many to achieve their goals in life without their geographic location hindering them is possible.

This bill will be hugely advantageous to the students of both Cecil and Harford County. In fact, students all over North East Maryland will be able to take advantage of this program. Not only will students be able to attain their higher education goals, but it also expands the operations of local colleges and universities, specifically and . The strategic partnership between these two institutions will fundamentally change the way that students receive their educational needs in the county.

A recent story by the Baltimore Sun featured this bill, and I am proud to have sponsored this with Delegate Rudolph.

Very Truly Yours,
Mary-Dulany

"Without ever having to leave Harford County" Wait, I thought that was the objective. Either way, may be helpful for some people, I guess

When she said "Modern Democrats’ ideals of smarter more efficient government" she meant "Modern Democrats’ ideals of bigger government" How can anyone believe hiring more government employees and spending more money will improve efficiency?

I, for one, am very interested in hearing about the Delegate's position on the incredible, out-of-control state tax increases that are being proposed. The Gas tax, increases in income taxes, loss of deduction of home mortgage and all the governmental fees that are proposed. What is she proposing/supporting along these lines? Is she in favor of the County picking up the Teacher's Retirement? Of all the things to write about, while the 2+2 program may (or may not) make sense, what about the bigger picture?

Thank you for supporting those of us students who need to go to college close to home. I know there are a lot of responsibilities on your plate and I appreciate the time you take for those of us pursuing a college degree.
