How Many Homeless People Live in Harford County?

Harford County officials released the findings from their recent "point-in-time homeless count," a survey conducted each year to gauge the number of homeless people living in the county.

A total of 223 homeless persons were residing in Harford County on Jan. 29, when the survey was conducted, according to a statement from the Department of Community Services. The breakdown was as follows:

• 106 adults and 87 children were sheltered and receiving comprehensive support services.
• 24 adults were temporarily placed in motels through the Department of Social Services and the Office on Mental Health due to extreme weather conditions.
• 6 single adults were found living outside.

This countywide canvass allows Harford County to secure the federal, state, and local funding necessary to serve this most vulnerable population, according to the Department of Community Services.

Data collected during the annual homeless count also allows the community to strategically plan for the future needs of citizens, the department said.

Last year's count showed 166 people were homeless in Harford County, and in 2012, there were 178, according to the department's data.

Supporting the Harford County Department of Community Services in the effort were local homeless service providers, community volunteers, Harford County Government, the Harford County Sheriff’s Office, Havre de Grace Police Department, the Aberdeen Police Department and the Bel Air Police Department.
