Proving Ground Team Handles Unexploded Munitions at Assateague

Assateague Island is a popular campground and sightseeing destination south of Ocean City.

A team from Aberdeen Proving Ground was called to the scene after unexploded World War II-era munitions washed up on Assateague Island.

The beach there was closed Tuesday afternoon when the roughly 100 pieces of ordnance were found, FOX45 reports. The Ocean City bomb squad called a proving ground team that deals with unexploded ordnance, which then separated the weapons into groups and then exploded them, according to the report.

Salisbury television station WMDT posted a photo on Facebook of what appears to be the detonation.

The rest of the state park was still open to visitors during the incident, according to the park's Facebook page. The beach reopened later in the afternoon.

Assateague was used as a testing site during World War II, according to the report.
