Aberdeen Receives $1.2 Million for Rock Glenn Park

The Maryland Board of Public Works granted funding as part of Program Open Space.

Aberdeen is one step closer to having a new park.

The Board of Public Works approved more than $1 million in funding for a new park in Aberdeen during its Oct. 16 meeting in Annapolis.

The $1.2 million grant will allow Aberdeen to acquire land for Rock Glenn Park, according to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.

Rock Glenn Park, a project in the planning phase, will encompass soccer fields and a clubhouse in the 2000 block of Rock Glenn Boulevard, The Aegis reported.

The city of Aberdeen put $200,000 toward the purchase of land across the street from Medline Industries in August, according to The Aegis, which said the parcel would cost $2.4 million total.

The $1.2 million grant awarded this week falls under Program Open Space, which provides funding for the acquisition and development of recreational projects.

With the state funding, Aberdeen will acquire 21 acres for Rock Glenn Park, according to the Department of Natural Resources.

Of the four Program Open Space grants awarded this week, Aberdeen received the largest. Carroll ($31,400),  Frederick ($39,015) and Kent counties ($219,677) were other recipients, the Department of Natural Resources reported.
