Edgewood Researchers Keep Food Safe

The secretary of agriculture recognized a team from the Edgewood Chemical Biological Center for its work with the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service.

Federal officials recently recognized members of a research team in Edgewood for their contributions to food safety.

When the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service realized it lacked the technology and infrastructure to assess chemical threats, it turned to a team at the Edgewood Chemical Biological Center.

Researchers from the Edgewood Chemical Biological Center at Aberdeen Proving Ground studied "critical chemical threat agents," according to a press release from the center.

The research was designed to increase homeland security in the event of an attack on the food supply, the statement said.

Due to the work in Edgewood, the Food Safety and Inspection Service can better understand chemical threats and can provide safe food sources.

Each year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture recognizes organizations or individuals making "outstanding" contributions to its mission, and Undersecretary for Food Safety Elisabeth Hagen, M.D., recommended the Edgewood Chemical Biological Center.

Team leader Frederic Berge accepted the Secretary’s Honor Award on Dec. 11 at a ceremony in Washington, D.C.
