GIRLS HOOPS: Eagles Win State Title

Aberdeen defeated River Hill for the Class 3A state championship Saturday.

UPDATED (12:05 a.m.)— defeated , 62-48, to win the Class 3A state championship game Saturday night.

It was the first girls basketball title for Aberdeen.

The Eagles (27-1) got out to a 36-25 lead at halftime, and maintained control in the second half to defeat the Hawks (20-5) at UMBC's RAC Arena.

The Eagles led, 19-11, after the first quarter, and quickly expanded that lead with a 6-0 run to start the second.

River Hill frustrated Bri Jones by double-teaming the 6-foot-3 Eagles junior on the low post. Jones still led all scorers with 25 points.

Jones also had a game-best 13 rebounds and four blocks.

The Eagles had 10 steals, forcing 21 River Hill turnovers and holding the Hawks to just 35.8 percent shooting from the floor.

Nia Alleyne (9 points), Lakeia Hayden (8 points) and T.K. Fowlkes (7 points) were key in the victory.

Jenna Collins scored a team-best 12 points for River Hill.
