Newtown Team 2-0 At Cal Ripken World Series

The Cal Ripken World Series is played at the Ripken Baseball Complex in Aberdeen, MD.

A team of 11- and 12-year-old boys from Newtown, CT is off to a great start in the Cal Ripken World Series in .

Newtown entered Monday's schedule 2-0 in the tournament, representing the New England region. The team had Monday off.

Newtown rallied to remain undefeated. Trailing 2-0, Lucas O'Brien belted the team's first homer of the series to get New England within a run, before the squad erupted for six runs in the fourth. O'Brien homered again in the sixth to seal the win.

“They [Pacific Southwest] are a strong, sound team and it says a lot about our team’s ability," Newtown head coach Tom Harrison said. "I am impressed by our team’s ability to keep fighting and hitting throughout the game. We had three players put together a good performance and continued to put pressure on them knowing one team would crack.”

O'Brien had a two-run single, scoring Sam Grossano and Ryan Kost. Adam Bergeron reached base three times, including a fifth-inning double.

Harrison said: “I feel great about our team’s performance. We played well in all aspects of the game—we had a lot of good hits, played great defense and [Jason] Hebner pitched the entire game. We also had no errors, which ended up making a big difference in the game. Our number two and three batters came through in big spots to give us a great first win in the tournament."

Newtown visits the Maryland state champs at 8 p.m. Tuesday at —a scaled replica of Baltimore's Oriole Park at Camden Yards. It hosts the Pacific Northwest representatives at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at a scaled replica of Fenway Park.
