Tech Firm Marks Opening of New Aberdeen Office

Sigmatech celebrated the opening with a ribbon-cutting last week.

Officials at Sigmatech, a technical, management, training and e-learning firm serving government organizations, cut the ribbon on their new Water's Edge facility last week. The ceremony and open house, held May 16 at the office near Aberdeen Proving Ground, was attended by more than 90 local and state officials, according to a release. Retired Major General Joe Bergantz, the company's president and CEO; founder and owner Gurmej Sandhu and company senior advisers took part in the ceremony. The new office of the Huntsville, AL-based firm will be run by Senior Vice President Brian Simmons, who also oversees Sigmatech's Washington operations, according to the release.

Ripken to UMD Grads: Keep a Positive Attitude and 'Make Your Mark'

Baseball's Iron Man delivered the commencement address Sunday at the University of Maryland's Comcast Center.

Drawing on his experience with talent, attitude, and success in professional baseball, hall of famer and Aberdeen native Cal Ripken, Jr. delivered the University of Maryland commencement address Sunday at the Comcast Center in College Park. The "Iron Man"—best known for playing a record 2,632 consecutive games with the Baltimore Orioles—spoke to some 7,000 members of the class of 2013 along with their family, friends, and professors. Recalling his transformation from a headstrong rookie to American League MVP, Ripken urged each student to "thoroughly examine your attitude, to make it positive, and to go forth and make your mark on this world." UCBAC: 11 Region Champs in Harford & Cecil Counties

A by-the-numbers look at the Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference's performance in the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association postseason tournament.

Five Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference teams will compete Tuesday in hopes of continuing their quests for a state championship. Two of them will square off for a state title. Conference Commissioner Bob Slagle offered a glimpse at the numbers behind the conference's postseason success: Region champions, according to Slagle, included: "Perryville boys and girls track, Harford Tech girls track, Edgewood boys track, Fallston boys and girls lacrosse, Bo [Manor] and Bel Air baseball, Patterson Mill boys lacrosse, CMW girls lacrosse and Perryville softball." Tuesday will be a busy day for some of those teams. Fallston and Patterson Mill meet in the Class 2A/1A boys lacrosse championship at 6 p.m. Tuesday at UMBC Stadium in Catonsville. …

Harford Sheriff's Deputy Pleads Guilty To Bribery

Todd E. Johnson pleaded guilty Monday in Harford County District Court.

A Harford County Sheriff's Office deputy was sentenced to three years probation Monday after pleading guilty to bribery. As a condition of the plea, Deputy First Class Todd E. Johnson resigned from the sheriff's office, according to a release from the Harford County state's attorney's office. Johnson, a seven-year veteran of the sheriff's office, gave Final Notice Recovery and Location of 4501 Curtis Avenue in Baltimore unauthorized access to police databases. The business is desribed as a towing company that repossesses vehicles for banks and creditors, according to a release from the sheriff's office. Johnson used his agency issued computer to look up tag numbers for the company in an effort to locate the vehicles and owners and used the…

Hollywood Casino Sends 2 to Poker Championship

A Bel Air man and Baltimore man are headed to a championship in Las Vegas next month.

Two poker players at Hollywood Casino Perryville are headed to a national championship in Las Vegas. Steven Lemonakis of Bel Air and Harold Brooks of Baltimore each won a seat Saturday to the Hollywood Poker Open Championship, to be held June 27 to 30 in Las Vegas. The two seats are each valued at $2,500, and each man won $1,500 for traveling expenses. “These are the first Hollywood Poker Open Championship seats to be given away by us, so we are very excited to have the opportunity to send some of our local players to such an amazing resort in Las Vegas for this big poker event!" Tony Ventura, the casino's table games manager, said in a release. The championship comes with a $500,000 top prize, according to the event's website. Hollywood …

This Week: 5 UCBAC Teams Seek State Titles

The MPSSAA state finals are being held this week in lacrosse, baseball and softball.

The Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference will be guaranteed of at least one trophy returning to Harford and Cecil counties, as five teams compete in the MPSSAA baseball, softball and lacrosse state tournaments. Fallston and Patterson Mill meet in the Class 2A/1A boys lacrosse championship at 6 p.m. Tuesday at UMBC Stadium in Catonsville. Also competing this week are the Bel Air and Bo Manor baseball teams, and the Perryville softball team. They'll play in state semifinals on Tuesday with hopes of reaching the state finals later this week. Bel Air plays North Hagerstown at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Joe Cannon Stadium in Anne Arundel County. Bo Manor plays Allegheny at 7 p.m. Tuesday at McCurdy Field in Frederick.  Perryville softball plays …
