Barbara P. Canavan has been working for the school system for decades.
Three months after announcing that Superintendent Robert Tomback was leaving the school system, the Harford County Board of Education has named his temporary successor. On May 13, Harford County Public Schools issued a statement revealing that the school board has selected Barbara Canavan as the interim superintendent. Canavan will serve a one-year term as interim superintendent from July 1, 2013, to June 30, 2014. “Mrs. Canavan is celebrating 40 years of dedicated service and commitment to the students and staff of Harford County Public Schools as a teacher, administrator and executive director,” Harford County Board of Education President Rick Grambo said in the statement. School officials and police determined there was no threat and the lockdown was lifted.
Harford Technical High School was placed on lock down Monday morning after a person followed a student into the building. School officials soon learned there was no real threat, however. Lock down protocol was immediately put in place after staff buzzed in the student and the person who followed did not report to the office, according to Teri Kranefeld, manager of communication with the school system. The Harford County Sheriff's Officeinvestigated and soon learned the person who walked in with the student was an employee at the school, Kranefeld wrote in an email to Patch. The team beat Harford Tech Wednesday, 11-8
With an 11-8 win against Harford Tech Wednesday, Aberdeen High's varsity boys lacrosse team secured their ninth win, a school record. "I am immensely proud of the boys' effort," coach Hinson White said in an email. "All but a handful of them never picked up a lacrosse stick until they got to high school. They have worked tirelessly to close the gap." Aberdeen jumped to an early 2-0 lead, but Harford Tech evened the score and led at the half, 6-4. The Harford County Public School System is looking for a local resident with financial management experience to fill an open seat on the system's audit committee, school officials announced Monday. The five-member committee meets at least quarterly and helps the Board with financial oversight, serving as an independent monitor on school system financial reporting, according to the release. Members are not compensated and are appointed to serve up to two three-year terms. A 50-year-old Joppa man told police he was attacked and robbed during the early morning hours Thursday in Edgewood.
A Joppa man was assaulted and robbed Thursday morning in Edgewood, and police have charged two men with the crime. Rodney Dion Williams, 33, of the 1800 block of Simons Court in Edgewood, is charged with robbery, second-degree assault and theft less than $100, according to court online records. Steven Michael Mack, 34, of the unit block of East Bel Air Avenue in Aberdeen, is facing charges identical to Wiliams, court records show. The charges stem from a incident that took place in the early morning hours Thursday. The Upper Cheapeake Bay Athletic Conference includes teams from Harford and Cecil counties.
Rivalries add depth to the Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference. But, according to one official, fights among rivals are rare. A rivalry between Fallston and North Harford's varsity lacrosse teams was solidified earlier this month when a fight broke out during a game. Video of the altercation was posted to YouTube.com following the April 12 varsity boys game at North Harford. The video is attached to this article. Ken Zorbach, supervisor of athletics with Harford County Public Schools, confirmed there was a fight at the game. "It's been dealt with," Zorbach said. The man who allegedly robbed a convenience store at gunpoint was in a white SUV, according to the Harford County Sheriff's Office.
After a Churchville Road gas station was held up Friday morning, three Harford County schools went into lockdown, Cristie Kahler of the Harford County Sheriff's Office said. According to the sheriff's office, a man with a bandanna over his face brought a handgun into the Xtra Mart on the 2400 block of Churchville Road (MD Route 22) and left with an undisclosed amount of cash around 8:05 a.m. The lockdown was "standard operating procedure" to ensure that students were safely inside Harford Technical High School, John Archer School and Prospect Mill Elementary School, Kahler said. Seven of Harford County's 10 public high schools made The Washington Post's annual list of the nation's most challenging high schools, Harford County Public Schools officials announced Wednesday The list, which included 123 Maryland schools in all and nearly 2,000 nationwide, was published Sunday on the Post website. The paper ranks the schools by what it calls the "Challenge Index," which takes the total number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education and divides it by the number of graduating seniors.
