Noisier-than-usual booms are to be expected on post, officials said Monday.
Aberdeen residents and those living in surrounding communities may hear louder booms than usual in March, courtesy of Aberdeen Proving Ground. Post officials on Monday announced that testing to be conducted from March 11 to March 22 on Aberdeen Proving Ground may sound louder than normal. According to a news release from APG, "If weather conditions are not favorable in minimizing noise off the installation, firing will be rescheduled." In recent tests, residents from as far west as Perry Hall have reported hearing the loud booms. Testing is often hear across the Chesapeake Bay, as well. The loud booms that Harford County residents have heard over the past month may continue next week, according to Aberdeen Proving Ground's U.S. Army Test and Evaluation Command. Louder-than-normal detonations could be heard around the area between Dec. 17 and Dec. 21. According to a statement from the Army Test and Evaluation Command, "These detonations are likely to generate sound and/or vibration outside the installation boundary. If weather conditions are not favorable in minimizing noise off the installation, firing will be rescheduled." Aberdeen Proving Ground will conduct weapons testing early Tuesday afternoon that might sound a bit louder than normal. According to Karen Jolley, Chief of Public Affairs for Aberdeen Proving Ground, Harford County residents can expect to hear two shots about 15 minutes apart between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. Jolley said the detonations "shouldn't be overwhelmingly loud, but possibly more than we usualy have." Harford County Emergency Operations Center was being notified, Jolley told Patch in an email. Anyone with questions may contact Jolley at the APG public affairs office at 410-278-1147. APG-based U.S. Army Aberdeen Test Center (ATC), initially planned to conduct the tests last week, but they were postponed due to inclement weather.
