A teacher's union president suggested two Harford schools may one day be forced to close if Harford County Public Schools aren't granted more funding from Harford County.
UPDATED (11:27 p.m.)—Despite the suggestion from a teacher's union president that Harford County Public Schools may need to consider closing some institutions, no such school shutdowns are imminent, officials said Monday. Ryan Burbey, president of the Harford County Education Association, said during public comment at last week's Harford County Council meeting that a decline in funding for education may eventually force schools to consider shutting down some buildings. Two schools are officially in the running, and two more communities joined the fray in pushing for new school funding in Harford County. At Monday's Harford County Board of Education meeting, parents from John Archer and Joppatowne High School asked to be considered for new schools—joining Havre de Grace High School and Youth's Benefit Elementary School in the discussion. The Harford County Board of Education welcomed two new members prior to Monday's meeting. Havre de Grace resident Thomas Fitzpatrick, appointed by Gov. Martin O'Malley to represent Havre de Grace, and Patterson Mill High School senior Panashe Mutombo, the student representative for the 2012-2013 school year, were sworn in Monday. Mutombo, with his family in the audience, was excited and grateful for this new adventure as Student Representative to the Board of Education. "I'm happy to be here," he said. "I'm happy to initiate a good year with all of you. I've seen all the good work that you guys have put in here and I see the effects through the schools and I'm just proud to be here." Havre de Grace and Aberdeen high schools will benefit from the program.
Students and educators at Aberdeen and Havre de Grace high schools soon will have access to a grant-funded program to push higher education and consistency in curriculum for students in military families. Harford County Public Schools on Monday will unveil the Advanced Placement Training and Incentive Program (APTIP), which is administered through the National Mathematics and Science Initiative (NMSI) and the Initiative for Military Families (IMF). Aberdeen and Havre de Grace are the only two schools in the state to be awarded the opportunity, after 29 schools in 10 states in Fall 2011 and four schools in 2010 were targeted.
