Harford County Recycling Ranks 2nd in Maryland

Harford County now trails Montgomery County in recycling in Maryland, officials said.

Harford County has seen a 40 percent increase in recycling since its first full year of running a single-stream program, starting in 2011. But even with the increase, the county has dropped from No. 1 in Maryland to No. 2, officials said Tuesday. Harford's 59 percent participation rate is trailed only by Montgomery County, according to county recycling officials.  “We can out-do them. Let’s make that a goal,” Council President Billy Boniface said Tuesday after viewing a presentation on the program. Boniface added: “You guys have probably one of the most important programs in the county.” Check out the PDF version of a slideshow with this post, which includes many facts and figures about Harford County's program. Comptroller Honors Tina Mike at Edgewood High School

The Harford County resident was honored for her involvement in financial literacy programs.

Tina Mike of Havre de Grace was honored by Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot Wednesday for her work at Edgewood High School. Mike, who is the assistant vice president of financial education for Aberdeen Proving Ground Federal Credit Union, helped pioneer a program at the high school to teach students about finances firsthand. Students are trained to work as tellers for the branch, which is open 52 days a year for two hours a day, scheduled around students' lunch periods, according to Credit Union Times. O'Malley Rolls Out $37.7B Budget Proposal

The governor touts $325 million in cuts even as proposed spending increases by 4 percent over the current levels.

UPDATED (6:32 p.m.)—Gov. Martin O'Malley Wednesday presented his budget plan for the coming year that he called "a jobs budget." The budget contains no tax increases though O'Malley declined to discuss the possibility of a tax for transportation projects. "These have been challenging times to say the least," O'Malley said. He was referencing the seventh budget of his tenure as governor at the same time that the state has weathered one of the most severe economic downturns in history. O'Malley said Maryland taxpayers "expect their government to do more with less." The proposed $37.3 billion spending plan is for the 2014 fiscal year, which begins July 1. The governor's proposed budget contains $325 million in spending cuts even though the …

"Hate gays and immigrants as much as you want," Hmmm. I don't see this in my statement above jag. Actually, I hate people like yourself. Smug, arrogant people like you who are oblivious to what the government's role should be. Smacking sense into your head , all be it futile, would bring to me a great "sense" of satisfaction. I've learned by now that intelligent debate among conservatives like …   more ›

Snow Possible Thursday in Harford County

The National Weather Service predicts about an inch of snow in Harford County on Jan. 17.

Harford County's first snowfall of 2013 is approaching. Thursday afternoon could bring up to an inch of snow to areas of Harford County. Expect a high temperature in the upper 30s and northwest winds around 10 mph. Snowfall may continue in the evening with temperatures in the lower 30s, dipping into the 20s in some cases, the National Weather Service reports.  But the brunt of the storm will likely hit farther south. The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Watch for Howard, Anne Arundel and Queen Anne's counties and points south, including much of northern Virginia. Traffic conditions could be hazardous in those areas as more than 5 inches of snow is possible.  The Maryland State Highway Administration asks drivers to try their …

Harford County Council is moving back into its official headquarters approximately two years after it originally closed for structural concerns.

It took them just eight hours to scramble out. Two years later, the Harford County Council and its staff will take three days to move back into offices at the "Black Box" building at 212 South Bond Street. Recycling is and always should have been a great thing to do. I beg to differ on the traffic issues. I have lived in this county since 1965 right off of Bel Air Road in a wonderful community of smaller homes; it was a pleasant and safe place to live and drive. Now we cannot get on or off of Bel Air Road without fearing for our lives! TRULY! The traffic between Mt. Rd./Bel Air Road and Kingsville …   more ›
