The funeral service of the Harford County School Board president took place Tuesday morning.
Family, friends and colleagues gathered Tuesday morning in Bel Air to celebrate the life of Dr. Leonard Wheeler—the Harford County school board president who died suddenly last week. Rev. Jay Blake of Ames United Methodist Church said he asked the family to sum up Wheeler's passion and he recieved one resounding answer: he lived to teach. "This was more than just a career or a vocation, for Dr. Wheeler, this was truly his heart," Blake said during Tuesday services for Wheeler. Wheeler dedicated much of his life to education, retiring after 32 years from the public school system. Dr. Leonard Wheeler, the president of the Harford County School Board, died Tuesday. His funeral is set to take place early next week. Wheeler passed away suddenly Sept. 11 at the age of 73. The school system announced his passing to staff and the media on Wednesday. Visitation for Wheeler is set to take place Monday from 2-4 p.m. at Ames United Methodist Church in Bel Air, according to his obituary on McComas Funeral Home's website. A funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday. He will be buried at Arbutus Memorial Park, located at 1101 Sulpher Spring Road in Baltimore. At a press conference Monday afternoon, County Executive David Craig and others voiced their opposition to the proposed shift of teacher pensions from the state to the county.
Harford County leaders presented a united front Monday opposing Gov. Martin O'Malley's proposal to shift part of the cost of teacher pensions from the state to county government. County Executive David Craig, Sheriff L. Jesse Bane, Superintendent of schools Robert Tomback and Leonard Wheeler, president of the Harford County Board of Education, each spoke briefly arguing against the proposal during a press conference Monday afternoon. The proposed shift in pension costs is part of the Budget Reconciliation and Financing Act of 2012 laid out by O'Malley. The Harford County Board of Education held its first nine-member meeting in history Monday.
Leonard Wheeler and Rick Grambo have been elected as president and vice president, respectively, of the Harford County Board of Education. Wheeler, who has been serving as the board’s vice president, replaces Mark Wolkow, whose last meeting was in June. Wheeler was appointed to the board in 2008. Grambo, who was elected in 2010, had been serving in an appointed position. He was sworn in for a second time this afternoon to begin his elected term. Grambo nominated Wheeler before he was approved for the position by a 9–0 vote. No other members of the board were nominated. The 72-year-old has made his mark on the Baltimore and Harford County areas through service as a teacher from the elementary through college levels. “I love teaching,” said Wheeler, and he has mentors from his high school days to thank for that. “My high school teacher and counselor said ‘You’re going to be a teacher,’” Wheeler said. “I didn’t know what I wanted to be; I said ‘No, I’m not,’ and they said ‘Yes, you are.’” Wheeler decided to follow their advice down a collegial path that led him from Coppin State University to Morgan State University.
