Danny Mays Named New IronBirds Announcer

Mays was one of eight finalists who competed at Saturday's IronFest.

Ripken Stadium has its new voice. Danny Mays is the new announcer of the Aberdeen IronBirds, the team announced on its Facebook page Tuesday. "The choice was very difficult and very close," the team said in the post, thanking the other finalists for their "talent and professionalism." The eight finalists in the team's "The Voice" competition went head to head in front of celebrity judges at the team's IronFest on Saturday. Disclosure: Patch Associate Regional Editor Sean Welsh was among the finalists. Mays will be behind the microphone when the IronBirds open the season with a game against the Hudson Valley Renegades at Ripken Stadium on June 17.

IronBirds Name 8 'The Voice' Finalists

The remaining contestants will compete for judges at IronFest this weekend.

The Aberdeen IronBirds are one step closer to their new announcer. Eight finalists in the team's "The Voice" competition were announced Wednesday in a post on the team's Facebook page. The eight will face off Saturday during IronFest at Ripken Stadium in front of a panel of celebrity judges. Fan votes will account for one third of each contestant's final score. IronBirds to Host IronFest This Weekend

The free event Saturday will include the final round of the competition to find Ripken Stadium's new announcer and a Q&A with manager Matt Merullo.

The Aberdeen IronBirds will lead the 2013 season with the annual IronFest Saturday at Ripken Stadium. The free event will include a Q&A on the club level with new manager Matt Merullo, the opportunity for kids to take the field, and the final round of The Voice, the club's competition to find its new public address announcer. The top eight vote-getting finalists will compete in front of a panel of celebrity judges. Country musician Chris Monaghan will also perform. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tickets for 2013 games will be on sale at the event. The IronBirds, an Orioles short-season class-A affiliate, open the season June 17, when they host the first in a three-game set against the Hudson Valley Renegades.

Walk MS Raises $60,000 in Aberdeen

The fundraiser was held Sunday at Ripken Stadium.

More than 500 people turned out Sunday for Walk MS Aberdeen at Ripken Stadium. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society fundraiser is expected to raise $60,000, according to organization officials. “MS is the number one disabling disease among young adults. The funds raised through Walk MS help us advance research worldwide and address the challenges of individuals living with MS right here in Maryland," Mark Roeder, president of the society's Maryland chapter, said in a news release. "But more than the critical funds it raises, Walk MS rallies family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, businesses and government officials around a shared vision: a world free of MS.  We are so grateful for the wonderful outpouring of support from the Aberdeen …

Voting Opens for Ripken Stadium Announcer

The Aberdeen IronBirds listed 16 top candidates on its Facebook page.

The voice of the fans will help decide the voice of Ripken Stadium. The Aberdeen IronBirds opened voting for its new announcer on its Facebook page. Fans must "like" the Facebook page to listen to the finalists' auditions and vote for their favorite. The top eight vote-getters will be invited to Ripken Stadium on Saturday, May 4, during IronFest for a live audition in front of judges. The team, a Baltimore Orioles single-A affiliate, first announced the search in April, and received 70 submissions, according to the Facebook page. Know someone who's auditioning? Lardarius Webb Charity Softball Game Scheduled for June

The fourth annual Lardarius Webb Charity Softball Game will be played on June 2 at 4:30 p.m. at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen.
