Aberdeen Boys & Girls Club Needs Help Funding New Roof

The Aberdeen Boys & Girls Club needs help replacing its 30-year-old roof, which Branch Director Marcus Robin said is buckling in some parts and rotted in others.

"Especially with the harsh winter we're expecting, we want to take care of it so there's not something catastrophic" that happens, Robin said.

The price tag is $30,000.

The Boys & Girls Club is a nonprofit. Located at 100 E. Bel Air Avenue, the Aberdeen branch serves 130 children daily, ages 6 to 18. The cost is $20 per year and Robin said the idea was to provide a level playing field so all could participate in the after-school program.

Community partner Aberdeen Proving Ground Federal Credit Union (APGFCU) has launched a campaign with the club called "Raise the Roof," in hopes of raising funds for the roof before the end of the year.

Susan Kemen, senior vice president of consumer lending for APGFCU, said the credit union has raised $10,000 so far among its employees and through selling items like teddy bears earmarked for the cause at its branches.

"The last push is the community component," Kemen said.

Anyone can contribute by texting CLUBS to 501501. That automatically adds $10 to the person's cell phone bill, which will go toward the new roof. Kemen said that WXCY 103.7 FM has been promoting the campaign, which began this month and will continue in December.
