Harford County is under a severe thunderstorm watch until 10 p.m. Thursday.
Large hail and damaging winds are possible, according to the National Weather Service, which reported that just before 3 p.m. the storm was near Pikesville and was moving east at 25 mph, on track to hit Kingsville and Fallston.
A small craft advisory is in effect Thursday and Friday on the Chesapeake Bay, the weather service reported.
The majority of counties in Maryland are under a severe thunderstorm watch until Thursday evening.
