Police Identify Driver Killed in I-95 Crash Near Aberdeen

Four vehicles were involved in the collision Wednesday morning, Maryland State Police said.

One man died and another was hospitalized after a four-vehicle crash that shut down Interstate 95 near Aberdeen for four hours Wednesday morning, Maryland State Police said.

Robert John Killian, 48, of Bear, DE, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

According to preliminary investigation, Killian was driving a white Chevrolet Cavalier on the right shoulder of I-95 southbound at approximately 5:45 a.m. Wednesday, before the MD Route 22 exit, when he backed up into the far right lane and was hit by a pickup truck.

A white Chevrolet Silverado hit Killian's rear bumper, then the Silverado ricocheted across the interstate before coming to rest on the left shoulder, police said.

The driver of the Silverado was taken to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center with injuries not believed to be life-threatening, according to the report.

Police said that two other vehicles were involved—commercial trucks—the drivers of which were not injured.

A Mack Pinnacle in the center lane hit the Cavalier's rear bumper as the Silverado drifted across the interstate, according to the report.

In addition, the driver of a Freightliner Cascadia in the right lane hit the Mack truck's right side with its left side as it attempted to merge into the center lane to avoid a collision with the Cavalier.

Police said southbound lanes of I-95 near Aberdeen were closed for four hours and detours were in place as officials from Maryland State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, Harford County Emergency Medical Services and Maryland Transportation Authority assisted.

Maryland State Police investigators from the JFK Highway Barracks are handling the investigation.
