Extension Cord Ignites Aberdeen Townhome

A fire caused $15,000 damage to a home on Custis Street Wednesday, according to the Maryland State Fire Marshal.

An extension cord to a washing machine ignited a blaze in the basement of an Aberdeen townhome Wednesday evening.

The fire took place around 5:19 p.m. in a two-story townhome on the 700 block of Custis Street in Aberdeen, and caused approximately $15,000 in damage, according to a news release from the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office.

Crews from Aberdeen, Aberdeen Proving Ground and the Susquehanna Hose Company extinguished the one-alarm blaze in about 10 minutes, the report said.

The fire marshal deemed the blaze accidental, and as the result of an "overheated/overloaded extension cord connected to the washing machine," the report said.

Two children in the home alerted the tenant to smoke coming from vents, and the residents were able to escape unharmed, the fire marshal said.
